Bitcoin

One row from a list of ten, chosen by market value on 26 Oct 2026 from one named source. It is not a judgement, and it is not a reason to buy, sell or hold anything.

The price card is a reading from 5 Nov 2026, refreshed at most once every 24 hours, including a one-year series. Prices are in US dollars. The switch at the top adds the same reading in pounds. It is not a live price. The public networks page used another rule, on 21 Oct 2026, and it is not rewritten here.

Information, not advice. A clean result does not make anything a good investment.

What it is, and who can change it

Bitcoin is a payment network and a digital money. The people who use it run it. There is no central authority and no middleman.

Nobody owns the network, in the same way that nobody owns email. A change is proposed in public, often as a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal. Developers review it. It takes effect only if users, miners and the computers that keep the record choose to adopt it.

New bitcoin are issued more slowly over time, until issuance stops at 21 million. The 2008 paper, and the Bank of England's account, are on money and payments.
